When Redirecting Behavior

Instead of saying: Stop. That’s not appropriate. 

Try: I notice it’s hard to stay settled right now. Let’s try a different strategy. 

 

When a Student Is Distracted or Off-Task 

Instead of saying: Pay attention. You’re not listening. 

Try: What would help you focus right now? Let’s refocus together. 


When a Student Is Moving or Fidgeting

Instead of saying: Sit still. Stop moving. 

Try: It looks like your body needs movement. Let’s help your body get ready to learn. 


When a Student Is Dysregulated or Escalating 

Instead of saying : Calm down. You’re being disruptive. 

Try: Your body seems overwhelmed. Let’s take a moment to reset.
